Haec in animis vestris templa Studia Classica -

In 2004 Polish science suffered a painful blow - on 29 of September professor Lesław Morawiecki passed away after a short battle with severe illness. Friends, colleagues and students of the professor were deeply saddened by his premature death.
Les³aw Morawiecki (1949-2004) was a professor of The University of Rzeszów and The University of Maria Curie-Sklodowski in Lublin, author of several books and numerous papers on antiquity. He specialized in the history of the Roman Republic and Early Roman Empire, ancient numismatics and religion. His erudite works on Julius Caesar,
Marcus Brutus and the Emperor Augustus entered permanently into the annals of academic research. Professor Morawiecki was the real creator of the centre of ancient studies at The University of Rzeszów and a tutor of young scholars in Rzeszów and Lublin. We keep him in our memory as an outstanding scholar, open to the younger generation of
researchers, ready to offer his disinterested help to anybody, but above all as good friend
and colleague, full of humour and cheerfulness.

This volume constitutes a homage to the memory of professor Morawiecki offered by scholars representing almost all the academic centres in Poland in the fields of ancient
history, archaeology and classical philology.

I deeply thank all the persons who helped this book see the light of day. Especially I would like to express my gratitude to professor Stanisław Nabywaniec from the Institute of History at The University of Rzeszów and professor Sylwester Czopek and The Rzeszów Archaeological Foundation for taking on their shoulders most of the costs of publication. Lesław Morawiecki (1949–2004) fuit professor Universitatis Rzeszoviensis et Universitatis Mariae Curie-Skłodowska Lublinensis, auctor plurium librorum et numerosis scriptis de antiquitate. Specialiter se dedicavit historia Reipublicae Romanae et Imperii Romani Primi, numismatica antiqua et religione. Erudita eius opera de Julio Caesare, Marco Bruto atque Imperatore Augusto in annales litterarum academicarum in perpetuum inscripta sunt. Professor Morawiecki verus conditor erat centrum studiorum antiquorum apud Universitatem Rzeszoviensis et tutor iuvenum scholarum Rzeszoviensium et Lublinensium. Memoriam eius retinemus ut eximii doctoris, iuvenibus investigatoribus aperti, prompti alicui disinteressate auxilium praebendi, sed praecipue ut boni amici et collegae, pleni humoris et hilaritatis.

Hic volumus constituit honorem memoriae professoris Morawiecki, a scholaribus exhibitus, qui fere omnes centra academica Poloniae in campis historiae antiquae, archaeologiae et philologiae classicae repraesentant.

Profunde gratias ago omnibus, qui huic libro lucem videre contulerunt. Praesertim gratias ago professori Stanislao Nabywaniec ex Instituto Historiae apud Universitatem Rzeszoviensem, et professori Sylwestro Czopek ac Fundationi Archaeologicae Rzeszoviensi qui maiora sumptus publicationis sustulerunt. W 2004 roku polska nauka doznała bolesnego ciosu – 29 września profesor Lesław Morawiecki zmarł po krótkiej walce z ciężką chorobą. Przyjaciele, koledzy oraz studenci profesora byli głęboko zasmuconi jego przedwczesną śmiercią.

Lesław Morawiecki (1949–2004) był profesorem Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego oraz Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie, autorem kilku książek i licznych artykułów dotyczących starożytności. Specjalizował się w historii Republiki Rzymskiej i wczesnego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego, numizmatyce antycznej oraz religii. Jego erudycyjne prace poświęcone Juliuszowi Cezarowi, Markusowi Brutusowi i cesarzowi Augustowi na trwałe wpisały się w annały badań naukowych. Profesor Morawiecki był prawdziwym twórcą centrum studiów nad starożytnością przy Uniwersytecie Rzeszowskim oraz mentorem młodych badaczy w Rzeszowie i Lublinie. Zachowujemy go w naszej pamięci jako wybitnego uczonego, otwartego na młodsze pokolenie badaczy, gotowego nieść bezinteresowną pomoc każdemu, ale przede wszystkim jako dobrego przyjaciela i kolegę, pełnego humoru i pogody ducha.

Niniejszy tom stanowi hołd dla pamięci profesora Morawieckiego, złożony przez naukowców reprezentujących niemal wszystkie ośrodki akademickie w Polsce w dziedzinach historii starożytnej, archeologii i filologii klasycznej.

Serdecznie dziękuję wszystkim osobom, które przyczyniły się do powstania tej książki. Szczególnie pragnę wyrazić wdzięczność profesorowi Stanisławowi Nabywańcowi z Instytutu Historii Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego oraz profesorowi Sylwestrowi Czopkowi i Fundacji Archeologicznej w Rzeszowie za poniesienie większości kosztów publikacji.
