“American Warsaw: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of Polish Chicago” by Dominic A. Pacyga is a comprehensive and engaging historical study of the Polish community in Chicago, tracing more than a century of Polish immigration, settlement, cultural influence and transformation in one of the largest Polish diasporas outside of Poland, from the Civil War era to the present day. The book examines how three major waves of immigrants, refugees and fortune seekers shaped the community known as Polonia, documenting its economic and social mobility, interactions with other ethnic groups, political alignments, role of the Catholic Church, and internal divisions, while exploring how its members continually redefined what it means to be Polish in an American urban context. Pacyga also reflects on the shifting sense of “Polishness” as generations moved from working-class neighborhoods to suburbia, and how the community’s identity has evolved, declined in relative prominence as other immigrant centers have risen, yet remains a vibrant heart of the Polish-American experience.
